Well, for some time now I have been obsessed by the thought of joining a Roller Derby league. Last year, I applied to London RollerGirls and Croydon Roller Derby to join. I got try-outs for Croydon (it’s nearer) and in December, I got accepted to start training and then tested, then to play in proper bouts open and closed. So I’ve started basic skills training to have the test for them to see if I pass as a bona-fide derby girl.
We have done sticky skating, diamond skating, pack skating, plough stops, T stops, sprinting, knee stops, all four stops and some other things. Each have been dead exciting and I am truly addicted. I have bought all of the kit and have started to personalise it – I just got new wheels last week and they are immensely fast.
The best bit about derby is I can do it, apart from Hockey, I have always failed at sports and not enjoyed them unless it was purely for weight loss. But derby, I genuinely love, I can’t wait to get my skates on every week and do the best I can. Consequently, I can do these things, I am even trying more advanced things like crossovers and can manage it. The adrenaline rush you get is amazing. It sustains me for the sessions.
I went to see a bout a couple of weeks ago, it was CRD vs. Brighton Rockin Rollers at their Shoreham, factory built ring. It was enthralling and gave me an idea of what I would be doing. I cannot wait. The team spirit is also something I have never seen before, it is encouraging. Just want to go to a bigger bout now and buy some merch!
When I pass my test and theory, I can pick a name. This name can be held by no other person in the word, incase we ever meet in a bout. Options are tight and I fell in love with Princess Sleia (Star Wars) or Rudyard Krippling. They are plays on names, words, places, any pop culture theme. My mate at uni has a friend who is The Ovarian Barbarian. It doesn’t get much better. But of course, all of these are taken – so these are my options:
Obi Wan Killobi, Sabrina The Teenage Bitch, HufflePunch, Hermione Brain’dher and Thumpa Bird 1.
At the moment, I’m siding with the first and the latter – J’adore Star Wars and Thunderbirds.
One of the best things about Derby though is the community, I’ve already made a fair few mates who I train with or come into contact with during bouts/training and they are all like minded. I love it. Each have a distinct personality and are the kindest people I’ve ever met. It’s like finding a new family of people who all love derby as much as you. My besty is Kate, she’s lovely, we drive each other each week and we push one another. We live about 100m away and I hope we can become closer friends as we see each other over the next few months. Coincidentally, the photo taken above is from Tim, he does photography at bouts – he’s pretty good! He’s also funny as hell, last weekend we were skating and I heard the Mario theme come from behind me – it was him. I also told him he has a nice arse.
Anyway, you’ll hear about Derby more and more in this I guess. Just a helmet left to buy now!
