Just last week one of my favourite jewellery stores, Sour Cherry (think Tatty Devine and you’re there), recommended a great pop up shop called Geek La Chic on their Facebook page. Being a major geek/nerd hybrid, I couldn’t have been happier and raced down to Brighton for a little visit with Green Ranger.
Among the many items that I desperately wanted, including some TARDIS earrings and a Ghostbusters T-Shirt, I bought a My Little Pony T-Shirt. I’d been looking for one to add to my wardrobe for a while but hadn’t found a top that looked quite right or was of a decent quality, until now. After meeting the lovely owner, Amy, I’m glad I had popped in – she was absolutely lovely, super friendly and assured me that all the skirts and dresses could be made to any size. Perfect for me when everything isn’t quite in proportion – damn hips!
She told me they were mainly based online and only had the pop up until end of May, so I couldn’t resist taking a peek…
Online, I found many delights, ones that I’d been searching for – Spiderman skirts, Marvel sweetheart dresses and Pikachu slippers! After having attended one too many comic cons and expos, it was refreshing to see an online store fairly priced that don’t rip off fans, perfect for any girly geek or gamer.
I thought it was only right to share the wealth and while I’m at it, present to you my top picks:
Pikachu Slippers… because why wouldn’t you!? Just look at how cute they are! I always wear comfy slippers when I’m feeling under the weather or having a sleepy Sunday, so these would cheer me right up. (£15)
A little bit longer in length, this DC Heroes Skirt sits around the knee, which is great for work. As a tall lady, I always struggle to find longer skirts, so this hand-made, colourful comic-book design suits me perfectly (as well as having my favourite DC characters all in one place!). (£22) This item can be made to fit for sizes from 8 to 24.
This Star Wars Hexagon Sweetheart Dress was in the pop up shop and I instantly fell in love with it. A massive Star Wars fan since I was a child, this dress fitted the bill for just about anything; I’m thinking summer days spent on the beach or picnics in the park with a cute pair of flats. (£43) Dress can be made to order from sizes 6 to 18.
How adorable is this Super Mario Dress? If my mum would allow it, I’d wear this for my wedding! It’s a beautiful cut, bright as a button and pictures the famous plumber with a cracking moustache. Teamed with a chunky ribbon around the waist and a dainty hairband or bow, I can’t think of the last time I saw such an adorable outfit. (£45) Can be made to order from a size 8 to 20.
Everybody loves a bit of the Bat (even the Joker), so why not go for a Batman Logo Skirt? Not as immediately obvious as other patterns available, wear with a black tank top and some black suede creepers and you’ve got a nice little coffee shop or date outfit. (£30) Available in sizes from 8 to 22.
One of my favourites, this Spider-Man Skirt should suit Marvel fans everywhere. I’ve already added it to my summer wardrobe wish list to team with my jellies for a scorching day by the sea. You may even catch me wearing it at London Film and Comic Con when I finally get to meet the amazing Stan Lee! (£22) Available in sizes 8 to 24.
One for those chilly spring evenings, this Unisex Mermaid Sweat could be a music festival staple. Whether your going to Reading or Download, this childhood jumper is playful and light, so you won’t heat up too quickly jumping around to your favourite bands. What’s more, if your boyfriend or guy mates have it, you can always nab it! (£35) Available in size S to XXLarge.
As soon as I saw these online, I let out a little weep of joy. These Harley Quinn Leggings are great for cosplay or just because you want to dress up like the sassy jester, start calling people ‘puddin’ and find your Joker. Definitely one of my favourite villains, Harley Quinn is getting a bit of a revival in her new #52 comics, I’d definitely recommend picking up the series so far and reading. (£15) As a one size item, these will fit a size 6 to 12.
Lastly, this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Sweetheart Dress was the first item I drooled over in the pop up shop. A really feminine take on the 90’s cartoon, this would be perfect for a summer barbecue with friends and a few cocktails in the evening with a cute pair of sandals and a splash of green nail varnish to finish off the look. (£45) Made to order in sizes 8 to 24.
